The word “improvisation” may conjure up thoughts of musicians, comedians, and artists. However, as a clinician, this skill is an essential component to your relationship with your clients. Life is not static. As tempting as it can be to plan every aspect of your treatment goals and develop hierarchies, rigidity can hinder attempts to help your client’s progress.

Improvisational skills encourage cognitive flexibility in both therapist and client. It helps the clinician to model for the client active listening skills, feelings of focused engagement, and a level of appropriate vulnerability. It is important to practice these skills so that you may be more mindful of the present moment, and be able to flexibly adapt to the ever-changing therapeutic context.
